National Right to Fuel Campaign - A Pre-Election Reception

Date: 17-Mar-2010 at 16.00-18.00
Venue: Terrace Pavilion, House of Commons
Price: £FREE

This important NRFC pre-election reception is taking place on 17th March 2010.

The number of fuel poor and winter deaths continues to rise. Current estimates show that 5.5m million households in the UK suffer from fuel poverty or struggle to keep their homes adequately warm. Tragically, upwards of 25,000 excess winter deaths will be recorded for the 2009/10 winter.

The NRFC came into existence with the single aim of ensuring that every household is able to afford adequate heat, light and power. Energy is vital to life, health and well-being and not something that we can live without and remain part of society. We need Government to be courageous and commit to a strategic policy framework that addresses both the short and long term needs of those in fuel poverty – which ensures that people do not die from cold and which invests in measures to safeguard the most vulnerable from fuel poverty.

The reception will follow the launch of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition’s Charter and a cross-party debate about fuel poverty policy from 4-5pm. David Kidney MP, Minister for Energy, Greg Clark MP, Shadow Secretary for Energy and Climate Change and Martin Horwood MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Energy and Climate Change have been invited to debate “How can we stop winter deaths and end fuel poverty?” The event will be chaired by Paul Lewis, Financial Journalist.

The NRFC are delighted that British Gas have agreed to support the reception that follows the launch and will bring together stakeholders, influencers and supporters to engage in a practical pre-election debate on how to end fuel poverty.
